Captured over a three month period in 2014 these photos in this collection feature the people and places in the Katanga region of The Democratic Republic of the Congo.
It’s difficult to put into writing a summary of Congo except that it is a tortured land blessed but horribly abused. Life in Congo is a bit like the minerals that are found in the earth of Congo, delicate and precious but so cheap in the sense that people see it as always available and so they treat it that way. This is unfortunately a practice from the people that don’t call Congo their home.
Congo is a place that I will hold on to as it reshaped my world view and gave me an understanding that I would not have otherwise. It also showed me how photography is so important and tells more than a thousand words, it gives perspective and a glimpse of life.

“Central Africa was a region without writing, but not without a history. Hundreds, yea thousands of years of human history preceded the arrival of the Europeans. If a heart of darkness existed back then, it was sooner to be found in the ignorance with which white explorers viewed the area than in the area itself. Darkness, too, is in the eye of the beholder.”
